Dear , what do you think is the oldest human-created transparent material, other than jewelry? It’s glass. Following the development of the hand-blowing method in Rome in the 1st century B.C., the world's first crystal palace, made from 3,300 steel pillars and 290,000 glass panes, was created in 1851, generating colorful light scattering. |
|
|
The scattering of light is a phenomenon in which light passing through a material or surface is dispersed in various directions. The processing of transparent materials such as glass, crystal, and acrylic to cause light scattering is a commonly used technique in modern color, material, and finish (CMF) designs. The key theme of the Hïda newsletter this May, therefore, is "Scattering of light", and Part 1 introduces the elements of architecture, living space, products, and mobility. |

Since the birth of the aforementioned British Crystal Palace, humanity has generated light scattering through numerous structures. The Water Glass House, built by Japanese architect Kuma Kengo, is characterized by its architectural materials that are made entirely from glass. Water flows underneath the building, and the glass and the water scatter each other, creating the illusion of being on an alien planet. |

30 St. Mary Axe, an office tower in London, England was nicknamed the “Gherkin”, referring to a cucumber pickle. It is said that there is no separate lighting needed there during the day because abundant natural light enters the building due to its use of diagonal steel pillars and 5,500 diamond-shaped double glass panes. |

The value of "lighting" is becoming more pronounced among modern people who tend to spend more time indoors these days, post-pandemic. Here are some lighting design firms that help set the atmosphere for various spaces. The Czech crystal lighting brand Preciosa is drawing attention by expressing unique patterns inside and outside its crystals or by adjusting transparency and gloss to freely realize the kinds of atmospheres that customers desire. |

The European lights presented at the UK's Premium Lifestyle Edit Shop, The Conran Shop, create a fantastic atmosphere by scattering light through application of special patterns such as printing on transparent acrylic materials. The Italian lighting brand SLAMP's La Belle Etoile is handmade using the polymer material Cristalflex® together with exclusive magnets. Patterns that utilize the flexible and delicate material characteristics catch the eye. Black polymer materials are rarely used as lighting, exhibiting SLAMP’s originality in the field. |

The Samsung Electronics Galaxy A34 series was recently released in four colors: graphite, silver, lime, and violet. This product implements holograms and special highlights by imprinting certain fine patterns on the surface of its polymer material to create a light scattering effect. |

British tech startup Nothing has released a smartphone called Phone 1, which features a transparent rear section. The value of this product has notably been demonstrated through its production of light using US Corning's thin, transparent gorilla glass in conjunction with 974 LEDs. |

Louis Vuitton's third-generation earphones, Horizon Light Up, present a monogram flower pattern printed on the back of polished sapphire glass. Built-in LED lighting displaying gradated colors allows users to see light scattering displays that vary depending on the viewing angle. |

The recently released BMW electric car, i7, drew attention for its sophisticated crystal-based interior design. The crystal material’s rear LED spreads and scatters light, and the effect of the two-color gradation, in contrast to standard simple colors, is what’s so astonishing. In addition, the special patterned flashing generated by the Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film applied to glass in the sunroof is also a CMF inspiration that is not widely seen elsewhere. |

Colors that reflect light due to their physical structure, rather than material pigment, and often appear as bright and dazzling displays, are called structural colors. This can be observed primarily in nature, such as in the wings of a peacock or morpho butterfly. |
|
|
